When the Pen Turns Green: Guarding Against Envy in Kingdom Writing

Thank you for following The Anointed Pen: Writing as a Sacred Call for Kingdom Influence series.

I truly appreciate you for joining me on this journey to uncover the significance of being a Kingdom writer.

I want to wish you a Happy New Month in September, the Month of Divine Favour!

Our focus for this month of September is: The Anointed Pen and the Poison of Envy and our topic for this week is: When the Pen Turns Green: Guarding Against Envy in Kingdom Writing

Writing is a sacred call. It is not just the arrangement of words but a divine assignment, a stewardship of revelation, and a ministry of influence. When God places a pen in the hand of His servant, it becomes an instrument of truth, transformation, and Kingdom advancement. Yet, even the most anointed pen can be tempted by a subtle but destructive enemy, envy.

Envy is the feeling of resentment stirred by another’s success, influence, or recognition.

It is an ancient poison that has silenced prophets, corrupted priests, and destroyed the joy of many Kingdom workers. And yes, it can also creep into the heart of Kingdom writers.

The Subtle Entrance of Envy in Writing

For a Kingdom writer, envy often disguises itself as comparison.

You scroll through social media and see another author’s book launch.

You notice how many likes, comments, or reviews their work receives.

You glance at their speaking invitations or the platforms their words have opened.

If your heart is not guarded, admiration can shift into resentment, and inspiration into intimidation.

Cain’s jealousy toward Abel (Genesis 4:3–8) reminds us that offerings are judged not just by outward presentation but by inward posture. Abel’s sacrifice pleased God, but Cain’s envy turned him into a murderer. Similarly, when our pen is tainted by envy, our writing loses its purity.

Instead of serving God and His people, it becomes about competing with others.

The Cost of Envious Writing

When the pen turns green, three things happen:

  1. The Message Becomes Polluted – Instead of channeling God’s heart, the writing becomes a tool to prove a point or outshine another voice.

  2. The Anointing is Diminished – God resists the proud (James 4:6). Envy attracts pride and repels grace, which makes the words lack eternal weight.

  3. The Writer is Weakened – Envy steals joy, saps focus, and leaves the writer empty even after apparent achievements.

Paul faced envy in ministry when some preached Christ “out of envy and rivalry” (Philippians 1:15). Yet he refused to be distracted, focusing instead on the advance of the gospel. His example shows us that envy may surround us, but it should never control us.

Guarding Your Pen from Envy

How then can a Kingdom writer guard against envy and keep the pen pure?

  1. Celebrate Others Authentically – Make it a discipline to bless God for other writers’ success. Every Kingdom book, article, or message that transforms lives is a collective victory for Christ’s body.

  2. Stay Anchored in Your Assignment – No two pens are called to write the same story. John was not Paul. Luke was not Peter. Each scribe carried a unique portion of God’s revelation. Focus on what God has called you to write.

  3. Practice Gratitude – Gratitude disarms envy. Thank God for your journey, your audience, and your growth. Every step matters.

  4. Check Motives Regularly – Ask: Am I writing to glorify God or to prove myself? This heart-check keeps the pen aligned with heaven.

  5. Pray for Purity of Vision – Envy blinds, but the Spirit of God opens eyes to see that the harvest is plentiful and there is room for every laborer.

A Pure Pen for Kingdom Influence

Kingdom writing is not a competition; it is a collaboration with the Holy Spirit. When the pen is guarded against envy, it becomes a channel of life giving words, free from bitterness and comparison. The goal is not to outshine another writer but to ensure that Christ shines through every line we pen.

So let us lay down envy at the altar. Let us pick up the pen with clean hands and pure hearts, ready to write what the Spirit says for this generation. Because when the pen stays pure, its influence remains eternal.

👉🏽 Reflection Questions

  • Have I allowed comparison with other writers to stir envy in me?

  • What unique portion has God entrusted me to release through writing?

  • How can I celebrate and support another Kingdom writer this week?
